Service Dog Laws
Service dogs are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and are trained to perform specific tasks for individuals with physical, psychiatric, or sensory disabilities. They are legally allowed to accompany their handlers in all public places, including restaurants, stores, hotels, and public transportation. Businesses may only ask two questions: whether the dog is a service animal required because of a disability, and what task it is trained to perform. They cannot require documentation, force the dog to demonstrate tasks, or charge pet fees. Service dogs must be under control at all times, and a business may request removal only if the dog is out of control or poses a direct threat. Housing and air travel also provide additional protections for service dogs under federal law.
